The NaijaVoices Community is dedicated to advancing language technologies for all languages, while including data providers in the technology pipeline – an ethos we term “data farming”. In an effort to balance accessibility of our community datasets with sustainability, we incorporated a membership-by-donation program. This approach serves three major purposes: 1) it accommodates and facilitates commercial interests of our existing (non-commercial) community datasets resources, 2) while creating new speech-text datasets for the public, which 3) provides economic opportunities to our community of data farmers.

Donations are strictly used to create new speech-text datasets. In so doing we expand the NaijaVoices resources, create economic opportunities for our data farmers, and uphold ethical standards in data usage.

All created NaijaVoices resources are released. In addition, we provide impact reports to our donors which illustrates how your contribution is making a difference.

The true cost of creating the dataset is substantial (>$600k), while the donation amount is significantly smaller. Unlike a purchase, which compensates for work already completed, your donation directly facilitates ongoing efforts by our data farmers to develop new datasets.
